!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This is a spindle shaft from my JF-Stoll CMT 2800 hay mower. I thought I stopped pretty quickly after it started making noise, but apparently not as soon as I should have :/
This part may no longer be available, which means I’ll have to either find a used part or send it to a machine shop to be welded up and turned back down.

Oh no, that doesn’t look good . The bearing looks like one on our round baler that went and we didn’t notice it until it caught fire, had fun replacing ALL the bearings. On a side note how’s the haying weather up there been ?

haha, I replaced all the bearings in my old New Idea 483 baler last year... No fires thankfully, it kept eating shear pins until I figured out what was going on.
Last week was pretty good hay weather, I made 75 roun ds, it was that mowing that killed the JF, I had to finish up with a 6-foot Tar River drum mower. That took longer than I would have liked. I could probably have mowed another ~30 acres this week, the weather says we’ve got three dry days in a row... but I wanted to fix the JF and have it ready for the next big break. I’ve got another 50 acres that I’ve told a neighbor I’ll help him with, and I wanted enough good dr ying days to get to all of it. Also the JF mows about 30% faster based on it just being a 10-foot mower, and it has a flail conditioner so drying is faster. I’m half tempted to try some JB weld on the shaft. (I have new bearings)

I am learning that when agricultural equipment breaks...it breaks re ally properly and occasionally spectacularly.
I was reduced to using a hacksaw to make the last of the cuts to remove a cast iron knuckle out of the top of the three point linkage just so I could then drill out a rusted pin...simple job that took nearly 4 hours to do. Now I too can mow...and break something else!

Interesting about the shear pins, our baler didn’t break any.
Same here, we made about 35 rounds last week and have about 10 acres to bale tomorrow. How’s the JF been? I’ve never seen one around here.
You should d efinitely try the JB weld if you can’t find a shaft , after all you aren’t a real farmer until you try something like that!

I really like the JF, it mows FAST, being a drum mower I can clip along at ~8 MPH in heavy 3-4 ft grass and leave a clean cut behind. The conditioner has a huge amount of adjustment, and has the potential to be one of the gentlest flail-types i’ve ever encountered, or it can mash that shit up almost like a chopper depending on how you set it. It’s got huge flotation and is easy blades too. The giant drum sliders just float over rocks and branches and mud... Also, much easier and larger range of cut height adjustment than you see on most drum mowers. Service isnt quite as easy as a disc, but its easy for a drum. They’re pretty rare in North America. I beleive the CMT 2800 was only ever sold in the US as as a special order, and there arent many in Canada either.
My plan of the moment (after I do 10000 other things) is to fill the big holes with 7014 welding rod , and then finish fill it with JB weld, like body filler ;)

Good to know about the JF, I doubt my Dad would would want one but if we’re ever in the market for a new mower I’d definitely look at it. Thanks for the info.
Yeah that should work good, I think you forgot a zero though ;)
